MKI announces Grand Opening first Health Information Centre at Baphumelele in Cape Town
Oostvoorne (NL)/Cape Town (SA), July 8, 2008 – Medical Knowledge Institute (MKI) announces the Grand Opening of the first MKI Health Information Centre at Baphumelele in Khayelitsha on July 15. MKI Health Information Centres are an initiative of the Medical Knowledge Institute, an international non-profit organization dedicated to healthcare education and healthcare information as a human right. The Centre will provide health education and healthcare information to the general public from all walks of life, for the purpose of health improvement, taking into consideration their individual cultural sensitivities.
Means
The Health Information Centre is being created for the local community of Khayelitsha offering a selection of training courses teaching different life skills, and to provide contacts with relevant support/information. The Health Information Centers will create a critical mass of trainers who will continue to empower their local communities. The Centre will also hold a simple public health library with an array of books aimed at all ages.
Goals
The Health Information Centre will create public awareness of how individuals, families and communities can benefit from the progress in medicine, public health, environmental health, sanitation, and management. The Centre will share education and knowledge so that individuals and communities may become more self-reliant in tackling their health problems in their own context. The goals of the centers are to reduce the knowledge gap that exists within communities, and strengthen the capacity of community members to document and share information.
“Medical Knowledge Institute stands for life loving, life generating and
life giving! Visit the Health Information Centre, take care of yourself and your family,
our health is in our hands”, says Archbishop Desmond Tutu
“MKI is convinced that accessibility to relevant information is the most effective strategy to improve healthcare in developing countries. I always have and always will continue to dedicate my life to Healthcare Education and Healthcare Information simply because it is a human right”, says Dr. Harold E Robles, Founder and President, Medical Knowledge Institute
