Medical Knowledge Institute and South African Red Cross Society establish formal cooperationOostvoorne/Cape Town, September 3rd 2009 – The Medical Knowledge Institute (MKI), an international non-profit organization dedicated to healthcare education and healthcare information as a human right, and the South African Red Cross Society (SARCS) have established a formal cooperation. The organisations will cooperate in the areas of maternal and child health, within the context of preventing mortality and illness, as well as the Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV.
- Exchange information on their respective health activities;
- Joint training activities and public awareness activities, including Youth Peer Education, Prevention awareness campaigns, Anti-Stigma education;
- Joint research activities into the child and maternal health within the context of South Africa;
- Adapt and pilot the MKI’s health passport initiative in project sites;
“I really admire the MKI and their dedication to ensuring a holistic health picture for our communities, as well as the undying determination of their Dr Harold Robles to get this project off the ground”, says Mandisa Kalako-Williams, Secretary General of The South African Red Cross Society. “The MKI will have our full support and we will do anything in our power to make this agreement work for everyone involved!”

Medical Knowledge Institute en Zuid-Afrikaanse Rode Kruis sluiten samenwerkingsverband (dutch)Oostvoorne, 03 september 2009 – Het Medical Knowledge Institute (MKI), een Nederlandse non-profitorganisatie gericht op scholing en informatievoorziening op het gebied van gezondheidszorg in ontwikkelingslanden, en het Zuid-Afrikaanse Rode Kruis hebben een formeel samenwerkingsverband gesloten. De organisaties zullen onder meer samenwerken op het gebied van de gezondheid van moeder en kind - in het kader van het voorkomen van sterfte en ziekte - alsmede de preventie van HIV besmetting van moeder op kind.
- Het uitwisselen van informatie over de gezondheidsactiviteiten;
- Gezamenlijke opleidings- en bewustwordingsactiviteiten, waaronder op de jeugd gerichte projecten, bewustwordingscampagnes over preventie en anti-stigma onderwijs;
- Gezamenlijk onderzoek naar de gezondheid van kinderen en hun moeders binnen de Zuid-Afrikaanse context;
- Proefdraaien met het MKI Health Passport op de projectlocaties.
“Ik heb echt bewondering voor het MKI en haar toewijding om een holistisch beeld van de gezondheid van onze gemeenschappen te waarborgen. Ook de overweldigende vastberadenheid van dr. Harold Robles om dit project van de grond te krijgen is prijzenswaardig”, aldus Mandisa Kalako-Williams, secretaris-generaal van het Zuid-Afrikaanse Rode Kruis. “Het MKI heeft onze volledige steun en we zullen alles doen wat in onze macht ligt om deze overeenkomst voor alle betrokkenen te laten werken!”

First Health Information Centre at Baphumelele in Cape TownOostvoorne (NL)/Cape Town (SA), July 8, 2008 - Medical Knowledge Institute (MKI) announces the Grand Opening of the first MKI Health Information Centre at Baphumelele in Khayelitsha on July 15. MKI Health Information Centres are an initiative of the Medical Knowledge Institute, an international non-profit organization dedicated to healthcare education and healthcare information as a human right. The Centre will provide health education and healthcare information to the general public from all walks of life, for the purpose of health improvement, taking into consideration their individual cultural sensitivities.
The Health Information Centre is being created for the local community of Khayelitsha offering a selection of training courses teaching different life skills, and to provide contacts with relevant support/information. The Health Information Centers will create a critical mass of trainers who will continue to empower their local communities. The Centre will also hold a simple public health library with an array of books aimed at all ages.
The Health Information Centre will create public awareness of how individuals, families and communities can benefit from the progress in medicine, public health, environmental health, sanitation, and management. The Centre will share education and knowledge so that individuals and communities may become more self-reliant in tackling their health problems in their own context. The goal of the centers are to reduce the knowledge gap that exists within communities, and strengthen the capacity of community members to document and share information.
